Course Overview

The Level 4 Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy offered by ACQ-London provides learners with a strong foundation in communication sciences, therapeutic practices, and professional values. This qualification introduces learners to the principles of speech, language, and communication development, as well as the challenges individuals face with communication and swallowing disorders.

This qualification consists of six mandatory units designed to introduce learners to the foundations of speech and language therapy:

  1. Human Anatomy and Physiology for Communication – Structures of speech, language, and swallowing systems.
  2. Foundations of Speech and Language Therapy – Principles, scope, and values of therapeutic practice.
  3. Linguistics and Communication Development – Language acquisition, phonetics, and communication processes.
  4. Introduction to Communication Disorders – Common speech, language, and swallowing impairments.
  5. Psychology and Human Development – Understanding behavioural, cognitive, and developmental factors.
  6. Professional and Ethical Practice – Building communication skills, teamwork, and safeguarding service users.

Total Qualification Time (TQT): 600 hours
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): Minimum 1200 hours

Applicants must be aged 18 years or above and meet at least one of the following:

  • A relevant Level 3 Diploma or equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Two subjects at GCE Advanced Level or equivalent secondary education.
  • Mature learners aged 21 years or above with relevant healthcare, education, or communication support experience (subject to approval by ACQ-London).
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency. ACQ-London offers a complimentary three-month English language support programme for those without a recognised English qualification.

The programme is typically completed within one academic year for full-time learners. Flexible study routes are available for part-time and distance learners.

The Level 4 Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy is delivered through:

  • LMS-based online learning with live sessions led by speech and language specialists.
  • Virtual tutorials, seminars, and case study workshops.
  • Independent study supported by ACQ-London’s eLearning resources.

Assessment is coursework-based, internally marked and externally verified. Learners must demonstrate achievement of outcomes through:

  • Written essays and technical reports
  • Case study evaluations
  • Presentations and reflective journals
  • Simulated project work

Graduates of this qualification can progress to:

  • Level 5 Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy or related fields.
  • Year 2 of a UK Bachelor’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy, Communication Sciences, or Health and Social Care (subject to university requirements).
  • Entry-level roles such as speech and language therapy assistant, learning support assistant, or communication support worker.

On successful completion, learners will receive the ACQ-London Level 4 Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy, a qualification recognised in the UK and internationally for its academic quality and professional relevance.
